Cooking Camp for Kids is here

posted by Kristy on 04.03.2011, under Cooking Camp

It’s taken some time to finally come to fruition, but Cooking Camp for Kids is being held at Sydney Sustainable Markets, Taylor Square every Saturday in March. We’re super excited that they are happening.

There are many ideas behind Cooking Camp but the heart of it is based on children, at an early age, developing a love and appreciation of cooking, the joys of local farm fresh produce and the value of sharing meals together with friends and family.

The camps are being run by a collective of wonderful volunteers and with a matching grant from The City of Sydney to help offset the costs and make the tickets very affordable.

If you’ve got 7-13 year old kids sign them up, put your name down to volunteer or just come along and watch.

Please send us an email to keep informed of possible future events.

Now this was an exceptional lunch.

Since a school is the hub of a community, we hosted this neighborhood lunch at Crown Street Public School to suggest how simple and utterly enjoyable it is to be outside and share delicious regional food together with our neighbors.

The Crown Street students helped plan the menu as part of the Week of Tastes during the Sydney International Food Festival, and the older students in the sixth grade class learned table etiquette so they could serve the guests at the lunch. Jeremy Strode and the folks at Bistrode helped prep the food, plan the menu and teach the kids proper serving etiquette. (The kids were all so excited for the important role they played and did an amazing job.)

Lord Mayor Clover Moore attended along with the many interesting people that make up our 2010 postcode, such as local business owners, parents, magazine editors, photographers, producers, lawyers, architects, gardeners, pet owners, and artists. The prevailing comment from guests afterward was (besides what a perfect day it was) how lovely it was to sit next to someone so interesting they didn’t know lived in their neighborhood.

Thank you to everyone behind the scenes who helped make the lunch happen and to those who attended as a guest. It was wonderful to get to know you all and to be part of such a special afternoon.
